Marriott disclosed that a November 30th breach exposed 500 million customer records after hackers breached the company’s Starwood network. Lost to the malicious actors were names, addresses, phone numbers, birth dates, email addresses, passport numbers, reservation data and some credit card information.
Insurance has covered the first $25 million in costs, but Marriott is on the hook for the delta plus any future costs. Many lawsuits are now underway by both customers and investors, so the cost is likely to continue to climb.
